L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program in Slovakia
The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program was launched in Slovakia in 2016. The program aims to support female researchers working in Slovakia and recognize their contributions through financial support and media visibility, helping them build their network of contacts and inspire young girls to pursue scientific careers.
While the digital revolution brings numerous opportunities, women are still underrepresented in critical fields such as information technology, nanotechnology, mathematics, physics, and engineering. Women make up only one-third (36%) of the workforce in these areas, and just 9% hold leadership positions. This disparity is even more pronounced considering that women account for 70% of workers in jobs at high risk of automation. It is estimated that by 2050, half of today’s jobs will disappear, with women losing five jobs for every one gained, compared to men, who are expected to lose only three.*
How does the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program work?
Each year, the program establishes criteria for participation and publishes the application on the website www.forwomeninscience.com.
Eligible female scientists register and upload the required documents. Subsequently, 12 finalists are selected to present their projects in person (TBC) to a jury of science experts chaired by Prof. RNDr. Ľubica Lacinová, DrSc.
From these finalists, three winners are chosen. In 2025, a total of €21,000 will be awarded, divided among the three winners. The scientists will have the flexibility to use the funds to directly or indirectly advance their careers.
In 2024, the program held its 8th edition. The awarded scientists shared €21,000, which they could use for both professional and personal development. This year, nearly 40 female scientists participated in the program.
The program collaborates with the Slovak Commission for UNESCO and the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
